The story is about Lance Richardson who struggled most of his adult life with Crohn's Disease. He describes the demands that his chronic illness placed on his young family, a lot of which I can easily relate to. Already in frail health, on Christmas Day in 1998, Lance was involved in a motorcycle accident which later left him in a coma for several weeks. While his body was being kept alive by life support equipment, he describes his experience about life after death and his spirit passing into the world beyond. The author is a Christian and writes from a faith-based perspective but the message it shares is not necessarily religious.
The message Lance brought back is a message of love, service, and the lasting bonds of human relationships. In short, life has little meaning without the relationships we make here and now. The way build and sustain relationships is through love and service. Here's my favorite quote from the book:
Service is the action form of loving one another. When you truly love someone, you seek to serve them. Your concerns are for their happiness and welfare. This really struck a chord with me. I've long believed that service is what life is really all about. I've learned from personal experience that selflessness and service does two things to you. It lightens your own burdens simply by looking beyond your own troubles and focusing on the needs of others. Suddenly challenges you face don't feel so overwhelming and daunting. And it strengthens your relationships in a lasting and more meaningful way.

Now I am probably going to be struck down ("Are you there God? It's me, Peter.") by ending this post with a video by a re-known athiest, but somehow it just feels right, don't you think? Whether you believe in God or not, the message is still the same.
We are all connected.

thats such a wonderful post I really enjoyed your writing.
ReplyDeleteI write my own blog about my trials with Hashimoto's in hopes of helping others through my experiences. http://elysiab.blogspot.com/
Dear Peter
ReplyDeleteThank you...the video to me really shows that scientists are as in awe of the universe and man as religious people are-that in itself seems like an affirmation of God. I don't think the 2 are as far apart as naysayers would have us believe...all of us should be in awe of this planet and all its connections to each other. Thanks
awesome words. Im new at this but I feel better mentally reading the comments. Thank you all
ReplyDeleteThat is an awesome video. I am a true believer, but a very quiet one. I don't proselytize or go on Mission...our relationship with God is such a personal thing, but I also believe that science and God are not diametrically opposed. If you see the joy, the passion the awe on the scientisits' faces, you have to believe that maybe they perceive God ina different way than we do. I amforwarding this on to family-very moving.
ReplyDeleteThis is so true...
ReplyDeleteAs a newbie who has lurked here for almost a year, the most impressive thing about this forum is the fact that so many people have remained on to help others in spite of the fact that their cancer journey is complete. It is remarkable to say the least and unequalled anywhere else on the web. I told someone today how I finally signed on and posted yesterday and almost instantly welcomed by many and invited to get togethers around the country. He remarked that's amazing. I agreeded. Great job by all and you'll never truly appreciate the comfort you provide to so many people.
